Recycled Roads Workshops

Two series of workshops have been held which addressed the benefits of using recycled materials in highways and street maintenance.

The first series was undertaken in January to March 2005 and was repeated due to demand in February and March 2006.

Focused on increasing the specification, procurement and use of recycled and secondary aggregates, the workshops were aimed at local authority highway engineers, their consultants, contractors and suppliers.

Key issues adresssed included:

  • recycling in local authority highway works
  • procurement and specifying recycled content
  • making recycling work in the local authority environment
  • developing specifications to encourage recycling

The workshops were delivered by specialists from WRAP, BRE, TRL, Atkins and Capita Symonds with local authority and regional speakers, and showed what can and is being done. They demonstrated how environmental good practice has strong financial benefits and how authoritative practical guidance on the use of recycled materials can be accessed.
