The Quality Protocol

The Aggregates Quality Protocol - Promoting good practice

WRAP and the Environment Agency have commissioned a project  to promote good practice in the application of the Quality Protocol for the production of aggregates from inert waste (Aggregates Quality Protocol). This project carried out by TRL Limited and Tarmac Limited will disseminate good practice to recycled aggregate producers and users.

  Project objectives

The main objectives of the project are to:

  • Raise the operational standards of recycled aggregate producers and the quality of the aggregates produced;
  • Increase the requirement of the Quality Protocol within clients' and contractors' tender documentation;
  • Promote its appropriate application with regard to the acceptance and use of recycled aggregates on construction sites by site staff and contractors; and
  • Increase awareness of the aggregates market and the appropriate use of the aggregates Quality Protocol, in the context of recovery from waste.

Project activities

The project  will consist of a campaign to promote good practice in applying the Quality Protocol.  It will include:

  • A series of workshops across England and Wales demonstrating good and bad practice through the use of case studies.
  • Training for Environment Agency staff to enable them to use the Quality Protocol appropriately in regulation and to understand the wider subject of the market for aggregates and the role of the Quality Protocol.
  • Promoting and disseminating the checklists and guidance notes through the workshops and through articles in trade magazines.

E-bulletins will be issued at intervals with updates on the project progress and details of the workshops.

Good practice workshops

Free half-day workshops for recycled aggregate producers and purchasers are being held to provide advice and training on applying the Quality Protocol. Speakers from the Environment Agency, WRAP, the aggregates industry and technical consultants will provide information on the Quality Protocol and how to use it correctly and effectively.

See Good Practice Workshops for more information and to register for the events.
