CONCRETE

Overview

Concrete is a common construction material consisting of coarse and fine aggregates mixed with cement and water. There are many different types, classes and specifications for concrete.

Classification

Concrete can be classified according to the method of specification, to its properties, composition and intended function and environment of use. Concrete that is designed to form part of a structure, or carry load, can be classed as 'structural concrete'. Non-structural concrete is used for applications requiring a solid material but where load-bearing is not critical.

Most concrete is delivered and placed in the works whilst still wet (in situ concrete). Some concrete is manufactured off site and delivered to the works as distinct hard units (pre-cast concrete).
