WRAP Grants Boost Aggregates Recycling in the UK

Date: 25/07/2006

Aggregates recycling capacity in the UK has increased by more than three million tonnes per year, thanks to funding from WRAP

In the 2004-06 funding period, WRAP's Aggregate Programme provided a further £4.9 million of capital support to 24 companies across England and Scotland. This has led to a total investment of £16.5 million and added more than 2 million tonnes annual recycling capacity to that already put in place through WRAP’s earlier programme. In providing this support, WRAP has played a vital role in helping a number of businesses expand their recycling capabilities.

Mike Falconer Hall, Aggregates Capital Projects Manager at WRAP says:
"We are delighted that our provision of capital grant funding is creating such positive growth in the recycled aggregates infrastructure across England and Scotland.

"WRAP’s funding has been focused on helping aggregates recyclers to invest in plant to produce higher quality recycled aggregates for use in added value applications and, without our support, these projects would not have happened."

Capital grant funding is a key element of WRAP's Aggregates programme, which aims to reduce the demand for primary aggregates through encouraging greater use of recycled and secondary aggregates.

Mike Falconer-Hall added: "This is a great example of where the financial support provided by WRAP has led to a clear benefit, not only to the business itself but also to the sector as a whole. By increasing the availability of high quality recycled aggregates, as well as reducing the amount of material which would have ended up in landfill sites, WRAP's work is helping to improve materials resource efficiency within the construction industry."

The companies that have received capital grants from WRAP over the 2004 – 06 funding period are as follows:

  • Stitchacre Ltd
  • WH Maher & Sons Ltd

Notes to editors:

WRAP (the Waste & Resources Action Programme) is a major UK programme established to promote resource efficiency. Its particular focus is on creating stable and efficient markets for recycled materials and products and removing the barriers to waste minimisation, re-use and recycling.

A not-for-profit company, WRAP is backed by substantial Government funding from Defra and the devolved administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Working in seven key areas (Construction, Retail, Manufacturing, Organics, Business Growth, Behavioural Change, and Local Authority Support), WRAP’s work focuses on market development and support to drive forward recycling and materials resource efficiency within these sectors, as well as wider communications and awareness activities including the multi-media national Recycle Now campaign for England.

The WRAP Aggregates Programme is funded by Defra through the Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund and by the Scottish Executive through the Sustainable Action Fund and the Strategic Waste Fund. The WRAP work has the aim of reducing demand for primary aggregates by encouraging greater use of recycled and secondary aggregates.

On behalf of the Scottish Executive, WRAP ran cross-materials Capital Grant Scheme specifically for Scotland during 2004-05. This resulted in funding being awarded to 19 projects with the potential to divert almost 288,000 tonnes of material from landfill.
