Materials Resource Efficiency in Regeneration Projects - Workshops

In March and April 2006, WRAP ran a series of workshops titled - Materials Resource Efficiency in Regeneration Projects.

These workshops focused on linking demolition and new-build work to maximise the recovery and re-use of materials to enable the achievement of verifiable materials resource efficiency targets through design, procurement, and material recovery practices. They provided the delegates with the tools, planning and contractual mechanisms to achieve this, and offered practical advice and help to enhance the ability to improve materials resource efficiency. The benefits were illustrated by case studies of real demolition and new build projects.

Key opportunities were explored including:

  • Delivering materials resource efficiency through the planning system and contractual mechanisms
  • Setting and achieving materials recovery and re-use targets through design and procurement
  • The role of the supply chain partners
  • The tools available to maximise the recovery and re-use of materials, including the ICE Demolition Protocol methodology
  • Use of pre-demolition audits and site waste management plans
  •  Identifying and maximising the potential for recovered materials in the new-build

The workshops were delivered by experts from WRAP, EnviroCentre, BRE and TRL with the help of regional experts, and were supported by the ICE, IDE and NFDC.

A report has been produced which summarises the events and their outcomes, and is available below.
