Approximately 100,000 tonnes of pfa were used to raise the ground level of the site to accommodate a new flyover and road construction. The large quantities of pfa could be obtained economically and was preferred because of its low density and consistency. It also allowed the level of the site to be raised in only six weeks. A full environmental assessment of the material demonstrated it was appropriate for use in the location. The case study contains details of the environmental performance of the material as well as details of the construction methods and the relevant Highways Agency Specification.
